Oppo cell phone: Reno4 Pro 5G in the test

22 January 2021

The Oppo Reno4 Pro, which is 5G-compatible, is examined in our test, among other things, to determine whether it can withstand the expectations due to the high price.

Is the Reno4 Pro a premium cell phone?

If you look at the price of CHF 799, you might think that the Oppo Reno4 Pro cell phone belongs to the upper class of Oppo smartphones. But since Oppo has already taken the place in the upper class with the Find X2 model series, the Reno4 Pro should actually be included in the upper middle class compared to the other Reno cell phones. Or is the Reno4 Pro still to be counted among the luxury class phones?

First of all, it should be emphasized that the Reno4 Pro is a 5G-compatible smartphone, which is why it is often referred to as “Reno4 Pro 5G”. The 5G expansion in Switzerland has recently been a bit sluggish, but industry insiders expect the expansion of the Swiss 5G network to move in 2021. Incidentally, the Oppo cell phone is also 4G and LTE-capable, among other things.

The fingerprint sensor is – as is usual with modern smartphones – under the screen surface. Thanks to a special coating on the display, almost no fingerprints remain on the screen. In addition to unlocking the screen through authentication using the fingerprint, authentication using face recognition is also possible.

All of this sounds like upper class, but let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of the Oppo phone below.

Advantages of the Oppo Reno4 Pro

The design of the Reno4 Pro cell phone is very successful. The Reno4 Pro looks very thin due to the flattened edges on the top and bottom of the cell phone. The thickness of the smartphone is only 7.6 mm otherwise. The lens of the front camera is discreetly placed on the left edge of the screen in the form of a so-called punch hole and is hardly noticeable.

The fast charging capability of the Reno4 Pro 5G should also be positively emphasized. With the included 65W power supply unit, the Oppo Handy is almost fully charged in around 30 minutes thanks to the “Super VOOC 2.0” quick charge function.

In addition to the large internal storage capacity of 256 GB, the Oppo Reno4 Pro also has a large working memory of over 12 GB.

The built-in AMOLED screen delivers very nice colors. Thanks to a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz (Hertz), videos are played smoothly.

The battery of the Oppo cell phone Reno4 Pro with its capacity of 4000 mAh is also convincing. The battery life is approximately 11 hours. If the battery runs out too soon, you can activate the super energy-saving mode, which Oppo says you can chat for another hour and a half on WhatsApp if the battery was at 5 percent when the energy-saving mode was activated.

Both the selfie camera on the front and the main camera on the back deliver good results. In terms of video technology, the rear camera can produce 4K videos. Special features of the Reno4-Pro camera include laser autofocus, night mode and cinema mode.

The front camera creates 1080P / 720p videos (30 fps). The AI portrait mode should be highlighted, the algorithm of which ensures that the face is clearly displayed on selfies and portrait photos.

According to Oppo, TÜV Rheinland certified that the Reno4 Pro had such a low proportion of blue light that it was classified as eye-friendly.

Disadvantages of the Reno4 Pro

A negative thing about the Reno4 Pro is that it only complies with the water and dust protection standard IP54. This means that this Oppo mobile phone is only protected against dust, but not dustproof. And in terms of water, the Reno4 Pro is only protected against splashing water on all sides.

Some users may also be displeased that the Reno4 Pro does not have a classic jack socket for headphones. If you want to connect headphones with a 3.5 mm jack to the Oppo mobile phone, you have to use a USB-C adapter.

Another disadvantage is that the Reno4 Pro cannot be charged wirelessly via a Qi charging station.

Who is the manufacturer of Oppo?

The Oppo brand belongs to the Chinese company BBK Electronics, which also sells cell phones under the Vivo brand. Together with Oppo and Vivo, BBK Electronics is the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the world after Huawei and Samsung, ahead of Apple.

In Southeast Asia, BBK even has a market share of over 50 percent in the smartphone market if you add up all of BBK’s mobile phone brands.

Oppo Handy with Mobile Subscription

At alao you can now get a smartphone with a mobile subscription. Users of the comparison platform alao can choose from certain iPhones, Huawei P30 mobile phones, Samsung Galaxy smartphones and the Oppo Reno4 Pro 5G and then decide on a mobile subscription that matches their desired mobile phone and their own needs. Both mobile subscription and smartphone can then be ordered as a package from alao within a few minutes – without any paperwork.

Test conclusion

Whether the Oppo Handy Reno4 Pro 5G is an upper-class cell phone or an upper middle-class cell phone is actually just a dispute about terms. Because the demarcation is fluid. Nevertheless, in view of the moderate dust and water protection and the lack of wireless charging option, one should not speak of a luxury cell phone. In addition, instead of the premium Snapdragon 865 processor, only Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 765G processor is built into the Reno4 Pro, which at least achieves a performance of up to 2.4 GHz.

With its 5G suitability, fast charging capability, large storage capacity and, for example, the elegant design, the Reno4 Pro is well worth the money. A cell phone with a comparable price would be the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, which is part of Samsung’s upper class, but offers only half as much internal storage space and RAM as the Reno4 Pro. In addition, the screen of the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G is 6 “smaller than the 6.5-inch model from the Oppo cell phone.
