The network coverage of a cellular provider shows you the availability of a cellular network at a specific location. If this is good at a location, good reception can be guaranteed.
There are numerous providers of mobile phone subscriptions in Switzerland, but few of these companies also have their own network. This is mainly due to the high costs incurred in building, operating and expanding such a network. Normally, the smaller providers fall back on the existing networks of a large provider.
The mobile communications provider Wingo is a sub-brand of Swisscom AG, the largest mobile network operator in Switzerland, and benefits from its nationwide network coverage. According to Swisscom, the following networks are operated: 3G (UMTS / HSPA), 4G (LTE), 4G + / LTE Advanced, 5G and 5G +.
According to the network operators, almost 100% of the Swiss are already benefiting from the 4G network. The providers are now working on comprehensive 5G network coverage, which guarantees even faster internet. According to Swisscom, 96% of the population have already used the basic version of the 5G network. At the end of 2020, Swisscom had more than 1239 antennas in 522 locations with 5G +.
The new standard can already be used, especially in urban regions.
The abbreviations 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G are the names for the different generations of the cellular standard. The G stands for generation. The main difference between the individual connection types is the speed of data transmission.
The differences between the cellular standards at a glance:
3G: With the introduction of UMTS, the era of mobile surfing began. The predecessor 2G was mainly used for telephony and sending SMS. With the 3G / UMTS cellular standard, download speeds of up to 384 kbit / s can be achieved.
4G: With the 4G network coverage, fast surfing and downloading is possible. The LTE connection enables a speed of 500 Mbit / s. In practice, however, the maximum download speeds are almost never achieved, as this is heavily dependent on the number of devices logged into the transmission tower. In addition, it is crucial which LTE download rate the smartphone supports.
LTE is also much more extensive than the 3G network. Many network providers have now had their antennas converted into LTE antennas.
5G: Industry in particular benefits from the even faster 5G network. The download speed is up to 2 Gbit / s. The 5G + network uses 5G with high bandwidths and even enables transmission rates of up to 10 Gbit / s.
