Have you resolved to live more sustainably in 2022? Then we have good news for you: By shopping at alao, you will now offset your cell phone carbon footprint. For every order you place, we will plant 10 trees for you, which will remove the CO2 from the air. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide and bind it to themselves. They clean our air, so to speak, by filtering out the harmful substances. Thus, planting trees is one of the most sustainable, cost-effective and, above all, effective ways of contributing to climate protection.

How Grow My Tree works

All you have to do is place an order with alao, which will add 10 trees to our campaign. Once we have all 10,000 trees, we will order the transplanting from Grow My Tree and receive a certificate to confirm it. Grow My Tree then gets to work in the global south (Madagascar, Malawi, Uganda, etc.): the tree seeds are grown into seedlings in a nursery and then planted with other native species. Over several years, a mixed forest is thus created.

Tree chain reaction

Maybe you’re wondering what’s so great about a new mixed forest. The answer is: a lot! The trees clean the air through their photosynthesis and thus also the rainwater, which leads to a regenerated ecosystem. This triggers a positive chain reaction in the surrounding village communities.

Vegetables can be grown again and fruit trees produce yields. These yields not only serve as food for the surrounding village communities. They can also be sold and thus become a source of income. With the financial income, the health situation also improves, allowing children, especially girls, to go to school. For this reason, the village communities protect the forest out of their own interest and through Grow My Tree, local villagers are eventually hired and trained to plant trees.

Tree Chain Reaction

What do trees continue to do for the environment?

Sure, neutralizing our CO2 emissions is great. But the great thing is that tree transplants can do so much more than just clean up the air. Not only are they life-changing for the surrounding village communities, but they also make a key contribution to nature. For example:

1. Creates habitat for animals

A tree is often also an important habitat for numerous animals and other plant species. Planting forests helps maintain biodiversity.

2. Protects nature

Both root and canopy trees contribute to nature conservation: the former holds the soil together and prevents landslides, while the latter slows the speed at which rainwater reaches the ground, preventing flooding.

3. Counteracts global warming

Trees provide shade and their leaves give off water vapor, cooling the planet even more. This is especially important now in times of global warming.

Why smartphones are harmful to the environment

Wherever electricity and energy are used, CO2 is also emitted. Of course, this also applies to smartphones. For example, every time the battery is charged with electricity. Or when the cell phone uses a data center. Which is the case with every digital service we use. In other words, every text message, every phone call, every video download involves a server in a data center that makes this communication possible. According to an analysis by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), information and communications technology is thus responsible for more than three percent of global CO2 emissions. This corresponds to around 1.3 gigatons of CO2 per year, with the telecommunications industry alone producing an estimated half of this.

Most environmentally friendly communication: SMS

According to the calculations of Mike Berners-Lee, author and researcher at Lancaster University, sending an SMS produces the least CO2 of all digital communication channels. In fact, each SMS generates only 0.024 grams of CO2. That’s about the same amount as a one-minute phone call over the mobile network. An e-mail is much higher: 4 grams for a standard e-mail, 50 grams with pictures and a large attachment.

Energy-intensive smartphone production

However, a smartphone requires even more energy and thus CO2 in its production. It needs five to ten times as much carbon dioxide there as in use. The main reason for this is the raw materials needed for production. The mining of aluminum, cobalt and other metals and earths, for example, requires a great deal of energy.

One alao order offsets a lifetime of smartphone use

Our air contains tons of excess carbon dioxide, and as cell phone users, we contribute quite a bit: On average, a single smartphone produces 47kg of CO2. This includes all stages from production to recycling.

It’s hard to say exactly how much CO2 a single tree absorbs. The amount varies depending on the tree species, tree characteristics and ecosystem in which the tree lives. Grow My Tree states that a tree absorbs about 22 kg of CO2 per year. The ten trees we plant for you with an alao purchase are definitely enough to offset your lifetime of smartphone use.
