Internet provider comparison of Swiss providers

19 April 2024

At present, 28 different Internet providers ensure that the provision of online access in Switzerland is considered to be one of the best in Western Europe. Providers are constantly striving to expand capacities and increase data transfer speeds. But which providers make the most attractive offers and offer the cheapest subscriptions? We have dared the big Internet subscription comparison.

Transmission speeds and connection types

Are you thinking about which DSL tariff and which provider suits you best? You’re wondering if you should use mobile Internet instead of a DSL connection? Or would you like to know if fiber optic cables are available in your place of residence? Then you’ve come to the right place. In our Internet comparison of Swiss providers, we introduce you to the advantages and disadvantages and inform you about your options.

The best-known providers of DSL and cable connections in Switzerland are Sunrise, Swisscom, UPC, Wingo, Yallo and Salt. But smaller providers such as Teleboy are also increasingly offering attractive and, above all, low-cost rates. Sunrise and Yallo have a joint, comprehensive fiber optic network. Digital television and the use of the Internet are made possible particularly quickly and with high quality via fibre optics. Swisscom is the market leader in the mobile communications market and is responsible for a large proportion of Swiss telephone lines. In addition to wired Internet, Swisscom also offers mobile and fixed network rates as well as Internet television.

Salt, like UPC, offers the same services via fiber optic network, and Teleboy is a young, innovative company that currently stands out for its particularly low-cost subscriptions. In a direct Internet comparison of Switzerland’s largest providers, Sunrise and Swisscom scored best, with Swisscom showing slight advantages with regard to the mobile Internet and Sunrise shining with slightly better telephony performance. On the third place, but still with the rating “very good”, landed Salt.

But which tariff suits your needs best?

Almost all providers offer both DSL and fibre optic connections. Teleboy provides some of its home rates, which allow faster download rates from 300 MBit per second, exclusively via fiber optic cable. UPC mainly uses cable connections. The Internet speed is higher compared to fiber optic cables and cable connections. However, in addition to the download rate, the upload rate must also be taken into account, which in turn is often higher with DSL lines. The mobile phone network is an interesting and popular alternative to the wired Internet. Switzerland’s 4G network is very well developed and with the increasing establishment of 5G, which is expected to reach download speeds of up to 3 GBit/s, the highest surfing speeds will be possible in the future. 4G realizes download rates of about 30 MBit. Fibre-optic Internet is often even faster by comparison at present. DSL fiber optic lines also often have a higher download rate in comparison. With our internet subscription comparison, you can quickly and easily find out which provider provides the right subscription for your requirements.

Comparison of the different Internet providers

The different Internet connections and the associated subscriptions are available with download rates between 30 and 1000 MBit. Like the Sunrise offer, the Swisscom Internet subscription is available with 50, 200 or 1000 MBit. While Sunrise offers the option of activating the subscription online and free of charge, Swisscom charges a setup fee of CHF 59 for new subscriptions. The two largest providers, Wingo and UPC, also supply a WLAN router. If you decide to subscribe to Teleboy, you will receive an associated FRITZ box. In terms of Internet price comparison, the small provider also performs well in terms of tariffs. 50 MBit is available for CHF 44, CHF 45 for Sunrise and CHF 65 for Swisscom.

However, the innovative Internet provider offers a symmetrical connection only for an additional charge. This is already included as standard in the Sunrise, Swisscom and Wingo subscriptions. This means that the download and upload rates are equally fast. For one GBit per second you currently pay 105 CHF for Sunrise, 90 CHF plus the activation fee for Swisscom and 69 CHF for Wingo. Teleboy also offers one GBit/s for 69 CHF, but without symmetrical connection. UPC offers a minimum of 100 MBit and a maximum of 600 MBit, with prices ranging between 89 and 129 CHF and no symmetrical connection either.

Salt is currently advertising with an Internet subscription that has a download speed of ten GBit/s and costs only 49.95 CHF. In addition, however, there are activation fees of CHF 99.95 and an installation fee of CHF 199.95 for the necessary Salt Fiber Box. Cancellations are possible with a notice period of two months. Yallo also offers cheap Internet subscriptions from CHF 49.

Internet without TV and telephony

Some subscriptions already include the option to receive TV channels or Apple TV. While various providers provide the extra free of charge, Swisscom, UPC and Sunrise, for example, charge a fee. So whoever books the Internet subscription does not automatically order TV options. Fixed line tariffs must be booked in most cases and are also not included. Only the Internet subscription is often a cheaper option and is suitable for all those who watch little television and rarely use the telephone.

Combined offers: TV, Internet and telephone comparison of the individual providers

Anyone looking for Internet and TV in a subscription will quickly find what they are looking for. The rates listed above all include TV options or the possibility to book TV in addition. Combined offers from TV and Internet correspond in comparison to Internet subscriptions. Sunrise generally charges CHF 25 for the additional TV option, Swisscom CHF 5 and UPC CHF 15. Internet including TV offers the cheapest Teleboy in comparison. Television is included in the subscription for an additional CHF 9.

If you would like to use telephone options in addition, you will find combination packages that also offer this possibility. Depending on whether you make regular calls or rarely use your landline phone, we also recommend minute rates or a flat rate. Teleboy charges CHF 5 for the minute rate and CHF 15 for the flat rate on the Swiss network. The subscriptions of some providers, such as Sunrise, already include a fixed network connection as standard. With other providers an additional booking is necessary. Combined packages that include a mobile tariff can also be booked. We recommend our Internet subscription comparison.
