An Overview of the Phone Coverage in Switzerland
Every year, several magazines examine which mobile phone provider has the best network in the whole of Switzerland. However, customers are not interested in whether they can make calls in every corner of Switzerland. They want to know whether they have good reception at home, at work, and during their leisure activities.
Check network coverage on site!
Before you commit to a specific provider via a mobile subscription, you should check its network coverage. The mobile radio test 2018 of the magazine Connect states that Sunrise and Swisscom have the best network in Switzerland. Both network operators had achieved exactly the same number of points in terms of mobile network coverage; 973 out of 1000 points exactly. In addition to the title “test winner”, they received the grade “outstanding”. Salt was beaten and finished last with the grade “good”. Similar results were delivered by the Chip magazine test just a few months later. Swisscom came first with a score of 1.2, Sunrise second with 1.3 and Salt received a score of 1.7.
The Connect and Chip tests, however, are only carried out on a random basis at individual locations in certain cities and along certain roads and railway lines in Switzerland. Whether a provider’s network is good or bad in the home environment is not revealed in these tests. If you would like to know how the mobile network coverage is at home or at work, you can start a free query of concrete addresses in the mobile coverage map at alao.ch.

Small providers also have a large network
When someone is looking for a mobile phone subscription or a contract for mobile data, most people first think of Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt. There are also many smaller providers who offer very attractive prices. These providers are either another network operator brand or independent companies. And best of all, the alternative providers each use one of Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt’s networks.
Wingo, for example, is a Swisscom brand and uses its network. The Yallo brand uses the network of the parent company Sunrise. UPC is an independent provider and will use Swisscom’s network. All telephone and Internet connections at these brands and independent companies are therefore of the same quality as the connections of the respective network operators.
The biggest difference to the network operators is in customer service. Swisscom customer service, for example, is not responsible for customers of the Swisscom Wingo brand. Wingo has its own customer service. If you want to speak to someone there, you pay CHF 1.50 per minute for the first ten minutes; nothing is charged for the time after the ten minutes. At Swisscom, the call is free from the outset. Yallo customers experience something similar. Although Yallo is a Sunrise brand, there is Yallo’s own customer service, which you can call for 1.50 CHF/minute. Sunrise customer service, on the other hand, can be reached via a free number.
